Of course, creating musically useful sounds takes a certain amount of self-control. 64 stereo voices⢠To control individual steps, move towards the bottom right of the panel, to the 16 step buttons. Modulation vectors The vector envelope setting lets you automate vector movement. As with the original, the Wavestate makes use of multiple sound layers â up to four here â each of which can contain a wave sequence of multiple PCM samples or a standard multisample patch and can be stacked or split across the keyboard. Directly below the filter, independent can be routed to the amplitude, filter or pitch, all using their own settings. The underlying library is huge, and I doubt that you'll fail to find something that allows you to build the sounds you want. After connecting I turned the wavestate on, and as expected, this resulted in Windows 10 giving a couple of notifications, first about preparing the wavestate, and then about the device being ready to use. Windows USB RNDIS Adapter drivers updated Starting up When the Sound Librarian started up, it briefly showed "Waiting for device", and then listed all the content on my wavestate, as expected. If this is the case with you, then you should contact your dealer. But if you're tempted to believe that the Wavestate is a 'bigger' Wavestation you would be wrong in one important respect. Korg has done a fine job of updating it to contemporary standards. My first experiments threw the kitchen sink at the system, but it was when I started to restrain myself that my sounds became much more interesting. In addition, many of the samples offer start point offsets, which means that you can play them from their beginnings or from a number of pre-selected points after that. Each layer makes use of an optional Master Lane too, which can control and reset the timing of the others. TL;DR: You don't need to install the KORG USB MIDI driver for the wavestate, but you should update the USB RNDIS drivers as instructed. The Sound Librarian installation instructions clearly say that you should check the status of the USB RNDIS Adapter drivers and update them. Published Wave Sequencing is back â and this time it's got knobs on! Doubly appealing is that each lane has a dedicated modulation knob, which can be used as a live-performance element, bringing another level of contemporary interaction to the Wavestate. The modulation potential of the Wavestate at the Performance level is astounding, with more than 1000 destinations available. 0 has granted the Wavestate a large smattering of gratifying performances, including drums, pads, basses and more, all of which offer the ability to switch timbres off by double-pressing the corresponding layer. Din-style MIDI jacks ensure connection to other MIDI-equipped instruments and audio gear. It's a good thing that KORG supports both Mac and PC equally well. The Sound Librarian requires at least version 1. The sonically diverse synth invites users to really dig in to their patches â or to sculpt new ones altogether. Carefully following the installation instructions, I found the USB RNDIS driver and updated it. Set Lists and Smooth Sound Transitions⢠64 stereo voices⢠If you haven't done at least that, it may be very difficult to diagnose what the actual problem is. 0, the wavestate delivers astonishing, ever-changing sounds with extensive hands-on control. Can the possibly live up to its predecessor? Set Lists and Smooth Sound Transitions. These layers can be controlled via the Vector control joystick above the wheels, which essentially allows you to mix between a four-point timbre in real time. But it's still able to produce an incredible range of superb sounds â indeed, I would suggest a wider range than before, so how does it do it? This allows you to create a far wider range of sounds than would otherwise be possible. It proved popular, particularly with ambient and soundtrack producers, or those simply looking for a ready source of interesting pad sounds. The vector synthesis element of the original is present too. Drafting a journey for each layer using independently controlled timing can yield some magical morphing tones. Every time the sequence moves forward, the individual Lanes are combined to create the output. So if you were thinking of installing or updating the KORG USB MIDI driver, it is not necessary or helpful when updating the wavestate or installing the Sound Librarian on a Windows PC. If you have already installed it for other devices, it's fine. Randomisation⢠I found many of the Wavestate's effects to be extremely useful, so I'm not going to grumble about the lack of detailed programming on offer but I still have a complaint; it's almost impossible to tweak them while playing because to do so often requires both hands. For the latest contact information, please refer to the Korg. In the meantime, avoid updating to Windows 10 Version 2004 unless it is necessary for other reasons. Audio titled Korg Wavestate Sound Demos by Sound On Sound The Wave or Wave Sequence that you define is, in effect, the oscillator in a Wavestate Voice, and its output then passes through that Voice's resonant filter and amplifier. There are also six assignable performance, rotaries on the front panel, a complex modulation matrix â allowing for the depth of any routing to be modulated by a secondary source â and a pair of Eurorack-like modulation processors. You can make things even more interesting by populating the other four Lanes. Some people have already suggested that this is a significant shortcoming, but I don't see it that way. The PC I'm using has Windows 10 Pro Version 1909 installed. To do so, you could use the pitch lane to alter the specific pitch at the step level. There is a new, big Windows update coming, but I haven't installed it yet, so I can't tell you if that would be causing any particular problems. 14 simultaneous effects⢠Its dainty display made manual programming about as easy as painting your interior hallway by pushing a paintbrush through your letterbox. To me it seemed like a good idea to not start up the Sound Librarian before I had checked the RNDIS driver, as stated in the instructions. Organic, inspirational, and mind-blowingly powerful. I updated to Windows 10 Version 2004, connected my wavestate to the PC and started up the Librarian. Connecting the wavestate to the PC The first step before installing the Sound Librarian application is to connect the KORG wavestate to the PC using a USB cable. Let's say that you want to create a sound that starts with a piano sample, followed by a flute sample, then a human voice sample, and so on up to a maximum of 64 samples. I logged out and back in with my Administrator account, and then started Device Manager again. now let's hypothesise that you want the pitches of each of the Waves to be different from one another. With all of that synthesis power, you might think the wavestate would play only one sound at a time. The Wavestate's synthesis engine is based upon samples and multi-samples called Waves, and you can play these individually or string them together to create all manner of rhythmic sequences and evolving sounds. Eight programmable Mod Knobs are customized to bring out the most in every sound, often taking them in entirely new directions. No complex sounds or wave sequences but tasty bread and butter for music production and live performance. The result is organic, ever-changing sounds that respond to your control. It does, however, offer velocity release. Randomization⢠Is it an update of the original Wavestation, a completely new beastie, or does it lie somewhere between? It is advised that End User review and strictly adhere to these Cautions. Looking for even more inspiration? Numerous filter options, including models of the Korg Polysix and MS-20⢠Modeled filters, including MS-20 and Polysix⢠Almost all front-panel knobs, and most on-screen parameters, can be modulated. Lanes can also randomize the step order every time they play, with realtime control over the range of included steps. You can assign the four modulation signals to a whole host of destinations on both individual Layer and global Performance levels though, so the options of what you can achieve with the vector system are extensive. Gigabytes of samples⢠Furthermore, many of the parameters determining each Lane can be modulated using things such as LFOs, contours, the vector envelope and the Wavestate's four arpeggiators, and you can even point multiple modulators at a single destination simultaneously. Transitions can range from abrupt changes to smooth morphs with your choice of crossfade curve and, by modulating the length of this crossfade, you can morph from a smoothly evolving sound to something percussive and back again or anywhere between. These are the Shape Lane, which applies a contour within a given step; the Gate Lane, which determines for how long a given Wave sounds within its step; the Step Seq Lane, which generates a modulator that you can direct to hundreds of destinations; and the Master Lane, which allows you to reinitialise the other six Lanes after a chosen amount of time. Wavestate of mind The original Wavestation was the epitome of early-1990s synth technology. Also added are new characteristics including shapes, gate times, and step sequencer values. For instance, a sample may be matched with a different duration, pitch, shape, gate length, and step sequence value every time that it plays. The rest of this post applies to a situation where the RNDIS connection to the wavestate is working normally. 14 simultaneous effects⢠Because these cautions were based on the laws and societal understandings at the time when each manual was produced, they might not be appropriate for the present time. The choice to use RNDIS may also be due to USB networking being generally more flexible, more reliable, and faster than trying to send lots of program and performance data back and forth using MIDI System Exclusive messages. So, as always, Read the Friendly Manual. Riding the wave The announcement of this synth came as a pleasant surprise, with little hint from Korg that it was looking to reinvent the Wavestation. NOTE: See the update section above for problems with Windows 10 Version 2004! UPDATE: Windows 10 Version 2004 breaks the RNDIS connection! The display shows you all seven lanes simultaneously and responds to the selection of lane-based parameters. This created ear-catching patternsâbut the patterns repeated the same way, over and over. 0 splits apart the timing, the sequence of samples, and the melody, so that each can be manipulated independently. The filter certainly has that squelch factor but seems to have a slightly digital squeal if overdriven, especially with digital tonal sources. Unfortunately, it seems that Microsoft has changed the Windows 10 RNDIS functionality in a way that interferes with the operation of the KORG wavestate Librarian. Now, KORG is proud to announce the next step in digital synthesis: the wavestate. Consequently, it can't recreate the monumental textures and 'songs under a single note' produced by its ancestor. All performances are based on one Layer. Whereas the earlier synth allowed you to allocate one Wave or Wave Sequence within a Voice, four Voices to a Patch, one Patch to a Part, and then eight Parts to a Performance for a total of up to 32 sound sources per note, the Wavestate allows you to allocate one Wave or Wave Sequence within a Voice, one Voice to a Program, one Program to a Layer, and then four Layers to a Performance, which means that it offers a maximum of just four sound sources per note. 5 Company takes no responsibility for any loss including but not limited to loss of data, financial loss, or personal loss that might arise from the use of, or the inability to use, the manual library or the specified software. There are seven lanes attributed to each layer level, with each handling a specific function. The shape lane allows for the alteration of the envelope of each triggered element in a wave sequence and, while this provides control of the attack phase, there are also gated-style triggers to give the perception of a doubled tempo. I thought that that was a great shame, but the huge amount of resources that Korg poured into the Prophecy, the Trinity, the original OASYS and the Z1 in the mid-'90s meant that the company never returned to the Wavestation. Specifications⢠The filters sound superb but my heart longs for an analogue filter here. KORG Gadget 2 Le for Mac DAW music production software⢠The keys on the Wavestate are full-sized, as opposed to the slimmer variety found on the Minilogue, and the keybed offers velocity, but not aftertouch. The filter section offers no fewer than 12 types, with numerous options including emulations of the MS20's high- and low-pass filters and the Polysix's SSM2044 filter, and these allow you to craft myriad sounds that you can't obtain from the non-resonant low-pass filters on the Wavestation. This allows modulation parameters to be assigned to the four A, B, C and D axis of the vector grid, movement between these can then be controlled manually using the front panel joystick, via the dedicated five-stage, looping vector envelope or via an external MIDI input. Wavestate sits on the spectrum between a remake and a sequel. It seems that there should be none, but if you continue having trouble, reach for technical support through your dealer. There are a lot more of these than before and they occupy a memory that Korg describes as "a thousand times larger" than the Wavestation's. The Wavestate also expands on the underlying tech in a number of interesting ways though. That honour goes to its wave sequences. The flagship OASYS and KRONOS keyboards developed Wave Sequencing even further, expanding on its unique palette of lush, evolving pads and driving rhythms. To make this happen you populate the Pitch Lane, which can have a different length from either of the previous Lanes, as well as different loop points and a different choice of direction. Smooth Sound Transitions allow previously-played voices and effects to continue to ring out naturally, even once a new sound has been selected. Furthermore, every modulator can itself be modulated by an Intensity Modulation Source so, for every modulation path that you create, the amplitude at any given time can be the product of Modulator 1 x Modulator 2. This results in the Librarian being unable to connect with the wavestate, so that you only see the "Waiting for device. Moving up again we come to the Layer, which adds an arpeggiator to the Program and allows you to determine things such as its volume, the MIDI channel to which it responds, the keyboard- and velocity-zones over which it plays, and any MIDI filters that you want to invoke to affect its performance. All performances are based on up to four Layers. Add vintage character to your sounds with the aggressive MS-20 Lowpass or Highpass filters, or the strong, sweet Polysix Lowpass. The wavestate supports class-compliant USB MIDI connections to Windows and Mac computers, and the wavestate librarian program is available as free download from KORG. The compact form-factor, with 37 full-size keys, transports easily and fits neatly into any stage, studio, or desktop setup. One of the weaker aspects of the original Wavestation was its filter, which lacked resonance and character. The concept: Techno but playable. Extensive modulation with hands-on control⢠The four onboard arpeggiators can interact with Wave Sequences for even more possibilities. Users are permitted to create one 1 copy for their personal non-commercial use. Sonically, the synth nails what Wavestation fans expect â even just as a preset machine, this is an awesome source of rich, pulsating pads, oddball textures and powerful multi-timbral patches. In essence, a wave sequence is a series of sequential steps, each with an attached sample and its own properties. With a careful choice of Waves and transitions, I was able to create sounds that wouldn't have disgraced a PPG and, given time, I suspect that I could have imitated a D50 by placing an attack sample in front of a single-cycle waveform. Modelled filters, including MS-20 and Polysix⢠Take a single Wave and experiment; the range of colours that you can obtain â especially if you define your own blends â is huge and, since there are many modulation destinations within the Multi Filter architecture, you can obtain some amazing results. To understand these, you have to dispense with the concept that a note, or even that a given moment within a note, has this pitch, this tone, this duration, and so on. On the one hand, this is very much designed to capture the sound and feel of its predecessor, right down to classic vector joystick and inclusion of a fair few recognisable waves featured on the original or one of its expansion cards. There's also a new Multi Filter, which blends the outputs from the dry signal and the outputs from low-pass, high-pass and band-pass filters some with inverted polarities for even more creative possibilities. Vector control⢠This is Xfade, which allows you to determine how one step evolves into the next. Set Lists offer effortless organization of your wavestate Performances, and deliver instant access at the gig or in rehearsal. The keyboard, on the other hand, feels a little unforgiving. There are also fascinating textures alongside the better-known instruments. There are buttons that allow for the selection of layers, as well as activation or deactivation via a double-press. What if they could evolve in organic, unexpected ways, instead of just repeating? Programming sounds will often leave you scratching your head and wondering how to step back to where you just were. The wavestate does seem to expose MIDI input and output ports through USB. A Performance includes up to four Layers and adds a Vector Envelope Generator that updates much more quickly than the Wavestation equivalent, plus a global Reverb and a four-band parametric EQ. The Vector Envelope and Joystick mix the individual voices of the four Layers, and can also modulate any other parameters. For this experiment I downloaded the Windows version, which is specified to work in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. I believe that the limit is 30 or so. In its most simple setup, vector modulation can control the relative volume of the four layers, allowing for morphing between four sounds. In other words, the moment you get your hands on this synthesizer you'll have a variety of tools to help you take your music to the next level. Since the ROM in the original Wavestation extended to just 2MB, this means that, despite exaggerated claims made elsewhere, the Wavestate offers around 2GB of samples. That doesn't mean that other KORG synths like the minilogue xd would not do exactly that, but each development team has their reasons, and anyway I'm just making educated guesses. This premise continues with the timing lane, which affects the length of each step, and the step seq lane, which allows you to set the parameters of individual steps. This issue has been confirmed by KORG already several weeks ago as of this update 2020-10-09 , and they are working with Microsoft to find ways to correct the problem. Similarly, the gate lane affects the length of time that the note is held open, a little like the sustain element of an envelope but at the step level within the wave sequence. You can program sounds using single Waves, but the real character of the Wavestate is revealed when you combine Waves into Wave Sequences. As I had updated my wavestate to version 1. This memory is not a ROM, which means that it should be possible to overwrite it, but there's no suggestion at this point that you will be able to load your own samples into it. Selecting More will throw open a host of other types, such as 2-pole and 4-pole low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and even band-reject filters. The joystick and envelope work together so that when envelope modulation is engaged, the joystick affects the modulation start position.
